2025 PIA GOLF CART AND E-BIKE RULES & REGULATIONS

Golfcarting can be dangerous!  Pleases follow the rules.

  1. STAY AT LEAST 10 FEET AWAY FROM THE EDGE OF DITCHES AND CANALS. No golf carts on docks.
  2. All cart occupants must remain seated at all times with hands, feet, arms and legs inside the vehicle.  No standing up or changing seats while the golf car is in motion. No operating the golf cart or E-bike in a reckless manner, in violation of any traffic laws or posted signs, or in any way that is disturbing or dangerous to other visitors or island residents.
  3. No driving the golf carts or e-bikes off road, on trails, on marina docks, on a beach or on Centre Dyke Road.  Operation is restricted to roads and parking lots.  No parking on the road.  No operating the golf cart on private property. No parking on private property without the owner’s permission.
  4. Do not exceed the vehicle’s design capacity: 4 people maximum on a 4 passenger golf cart;  6 people maximum on a 6 passenger golf cart; 1 person per e-bike.   Helmets must be worn at all times to operate an e-bike.
  5. No golf cart passengers under the age of 8. 
  6. No operating the golf cart  or e-bike under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any other substances that can impair operator judgement or reaction times.  No drinking, texting or talking on the phone while operating.
  7. Only drivers who have a copy of his/her license on file and has signed the waiver and rules agreements may operate the vehicle.  You cannot loan the golf cart or e-bike to anyone.  Operators of golf carts and e-bikes must have a valid driver’s license (no g-1 or g-2 for golf carts).  Minimum age is 25 for golf cart drivers and 19 for e-bike operators
  8. No towing. Golf carts and e-bikes may not be used to tow other objects or people on other objects.  This includes skateboards, bicycles, e-bikes, baby stroller or trailers, wheeled coolers, etc.  No placing other equipment such as bicycles, scooters, furniture, cooking equipment, etc. on golf carts without authorized permission from PIA. Coolers and luggage are allowed on the floor boards or rear cargo deck, not on seats.
  9. Pets or service animals are not allowed on the seats at any time Only 1 pet or service animal is allowed in the front passenger area of golf carts and it must be in a carrier.  If the pet or service animal is not in a carrier, it must ride in the rear cargo area with seat down and the pet or service animal on leash tended by someone other than the driver.  Note: this reduces the rear seat capacity to 1 pet or service animal and 0 persons, and overall cart capacity to 2 persons on a 4 passenger cart and 4 persons on a 6 passenger car.  Unruly pets will not be allowed on golf carts at the PIA island ambassador’s discretion.  .Maximum of 2 pets or service animals in the cargo area at one time (120 lb max combined wt).   Both must be leashed and attended by passenger.
  10. For Overnight Renters: No operating golf carts at night between the hours of 9:30pm and 6:30am.

 

CONDITIONAL RENTAL:  The operator and/or credit card on-file holder must agree to the above rules of operation and understand that if  they are found to be  in violation of any of the above rules by the Pelee Island Adventures Compliance officer or employee, or as determined by GPS tracking of the vehicle, they will be charged at the rate below and any remaining time on the rental agreement will be immediately forfeited WITHOUT REFUND.  Renters must understand that this rental is conditional on acceptance to the above and by signing they agree to waive any right to protest. They must also gree to be financially responsible for the equipment during the rental period and authorize having their credit card on file charged for the following, should it arise, as determined by Pelee Island Adventures:

-$200 for any lost key; $350 for each violation of any of the above rules; $150 recovery fee to have the equipment returned to the PIA office should the rental period be terminated due to a violation, accident or non-return.

-The full amount, as determined by Pelee Island Adventures mechanic, required to repair any damage the equipment sustained during the rental period (from as soon as the equipment leaves the PIA property until returned and check it back in with PIA personnel) and a charge of $150 per day for golf carts or $50 per day for e-bikes from the date any damage is incurred until the equipment can be repaired and returned into service.

-Late fees for equipment returns after the specified return time stated in the contract, in the amount of $50 for returns 11-20 minutes late; $100 for returns 21-30 minutes late; $200 for returns 31-60 minutes late; $300 for returns 1 hour to 24 hours late and every 24hour period thereafter until the equipment arrives back at the PIA location during posted regular operating hours.  Please note that while late fees, recovery fees and penalties for accidents and other actions that render equipment unavailable for the next rental may seem overly punitive, they are the result of real overtime charges, recovery expenses and revenue lost due to equipment being unavailable for the next rental.  Additionally, renters must sign PIA Rental Agreement And Waiver Of Liability and agree to be solely responsible for any accident, injury or death, along with all expenses incurred by them, any injured party and Pelee Island Adventures that is in any way related to their operation of the rental equipment during the rental period.

The above rules are a compilation of what is required to be compliant with Ontario Regulation 407/21 and the Township of Pelee Bylaw 2021-21 governing the Golf Cars Pilot Program on Pelee Island, Pelee Island Adventures’ insurance carrier’s requirements and common sense.  If you do not agree to the above rules please do not rent the equipment.
